Like any delicate scientific instrument, the microscope must be handled with skill and care. A few simple precautions can make all the difference between success and frustration. Here are the precautionary measures in handling the microscope.

Setting up the Microscope

Remember to set up your microscope on a large, steady table. There should be enough space to hold samples, slides, chemicals, and a notebook in which you can write and draw all the equipment you need for your work.

Always carry the microscope by putting one hand under the shoe-shaped base and grasping the curved stand that supports the tube and its lenses with the other hand. Everything should be in working order, clean and oil free of dust. If you have a slide with a prepared sample, place it on the stage of the microscope.

To maintain the good condition of your microscope, first and foremost guard it from dust. Cover the microscope with a plastic hood when you are not using the instrument and always store it in its case. Clean the microscope carefully to avoid the scratch in the lenses. If some of the lenses have fingerprints, clean them either with lens paper or with some alcohol and a cotton swab. Rinse dirty slides and cover glasses in liquid detergent and warm water. Lay them flat on a tissue and dry them gently with another tissue or lens paper. Keep them dust-free in a covered box.

Avoiding Eyestrain

When you constantly working with the microscopes, often than not, you may notice later on that tiny threads or specks may seem to float in front of your eyes while you are observing a specimen. These so-called floaters are cause of eyestrain. They are usually produced in the fluid of the eye, and they disappear fairly rapidly. To minimize the eyestrain, when you are looking in the microscope, try to keep your both eyes open although the natural tendency might be to close your free eye. If you wear eyeglasses, it is better to work without it. But if you must use glasses, prevent scratching them by putting specially designed rubber guards on the eyepiece of the microscope.
